Look at flowers, not your mirror

I’m going to use flowers as a metaphor here to tackle something dear to my heart. I love to instil confidence and assurance in as many girls and women and want to reach as many as I can.

I’m both lucky and blessed to have not had to deal with major insecurities growing up. Other kids made fun of me but for some strange reason I never let the teasing get under my skin. I have been a broadcaster for the last 5 years, and I’m a victim of occasional slander. Some have expressed to not like my forehead, some don’t like my laugh, some think I’m too skinny, or they just simply don’t like me, period. Once again, it’s doesn’t ruffle my feathers.

When asked what is the root of my confidence, only one thing comes to mind- nature. Look around you, look at nature, the same creator of all the beauty that surrounds us is who created me. Call it God, the universe, whatever makes sense to you but we were all born on this planet earth and creation itself does no wrong.

Let’s segue to flowers from that last thought. Next time you receive or buy flowers, I want you to take 5 to 10 minutes to really look at every single flower in the bouquet or arrangement. Even the foliage. A flower doesn’t think of competing with its neighbour. It just beholds its beauty and glory. You can have two stunning Italian Ranunculus side by side but each one will stand out in its own way. One may stand out for its brighter shade and one may stand out for the way its petals open up. My point is that there is no competition or comparison between flowers. Each flower stands confidently in its own unique beauty. It’s ok if someone doesn’t like one type of flower over the other. For example, I’m not the biggest fan of Lilies. I find the smell a bit pungent but that doesn’t mean they are not beautiful. It doesn’t mean everyone dislikes Lilies. In fact, I know a lot of people who love Lilies. In that same manner, not everyone is going to like, love, or appreciate you. However, that cannot define your confidence. We are all intricately and beautifully created, to be admired for what we as individuals have to offer.

A rose can never be a sunflower, and a sunflower can never be a rose. All flowers are beautiful in their own way, and that’s like women too. — MIRANDA KERR

Next time you feel down and not sure of yourself, do yourself a favour and buy some flowers. Take a few minutes to really look at them-- not your mirror! - Blessings
